A cyclist was hit by car and sent flying into the air in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

After the collision, the car allegedly sped away and the victim was rushed to hospital where he was was treated for critical injuries.

Police released CCTV footage of the incident and a man suspected of being driver was later arrested.

“The guy tried to take off after he tried to hit the guy on the bike and, unfortunately, dragged him down the street, from what witnesses told us,” officer Simon Drobik told local TV channel KOB4.

Police said Allen Hackett, 34, crashed his vehicle between the I-40 and Juan Tabo, before driving away. Officers found him nearby after setting up a perimeter around the area.

Mr Hackett’s behaviour was erratic and one officer said he appeared under the influence of “intoxicating drugs”, according to a criminal complaint.

He has been charged with causing great bodily injury by vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident and care less driving.
