From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Donald Trump Jr has called Prince Harry a “dude in a hostage video” in an attack on “woke” Meghan Markle as he laughed off claims she was a victim.

The ex-president’s eldest son ranted against Harry and Meghan on Facebook following their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, even though he admitted he had not actually watched it.

“Are we pretending that Meghan Markle isn’t the kind of person that was looking for all of this attention? Because it seems like literally all of her actions in life up until now, we’re about getting that kind of attention for herself” he said in the video.

“She just wants it to be good attention. The problem is if you don’t have the personality to do that. It doesn’t always work out as much.”

And Mr Trump told his followers that he had met the Queen and enjoyed his trip to Buckingham Palace when his father was in the White House.

It was the latest in a string of attacks on Meghan by supporters of the ex-president, whom she has regularly criticised since 2016 and once threatened to move to Canada if he won the White House.

Mr Trump’s son rejected suggestions that Meghan had not known what she was getting herself into when she married Harry in 2018.

“Are we really pretending that she was like a victim in all of this? That she wasn’t into the press? Has she ever met a camera she probably didn’t love?” he added.

“I actually feel bad for Harry. He’s like a guy in a hostage video. He actually seems like a dude I’d wanna have a beer with. I’m not sure what’s happened to him over the last couple of years.”

And he added that he thought Harry had been “brainwashed into some sort of woke reality.”

And Mr Trump said he wanted Meghan to answer the claims of bullying that Buckingham Palace is now investigating.

“But like her getting up there and being the victim of all of this when it seems like there’s people that work for her that say she’s no angel, and honestly guys I don’t know her from Adam,” he said.

“But when I’m watching those videos, when I’m watching this interview I can almost guarantee you that those people probably were verbally abused and treated like crap, because she doesn’t seem like the kind of person that treats other people all that well,” he said.

“I get that there’s the woke image that she puts out and all of that stuff and so ill get cancelled for saying it, but are we really pretending that this seems like this is a nice and humble, warm woman that had no idea what she was getting in to and had no idea there would be press when she was a princess of England.

“Totally clueless, she’s shocked, shocked. Give me a freaking break.”
