Haitian authorities have found the 4-year-old child of a US missionary shot dead by unidentified gunmen earlier this month, Haitian police told The Independent.

American missionary Roberta Edwards, 55, who ran Port-au-Prince’s Sonlight Children’s Home for 20 children, was shot dead in her car by unidentified assailants on October 15. The assailants kidnapped Jonathan “Jojo” Paul, 4, and two other teens in the car escaped.

“We have found the child that she was taking care of,” said a spokesman for Haiti’s National Police. The spokesman could not immediately offer further comment or indicate whether they had identified any suspects in the attack that claimed Ms Edwards’ life.

Ms Edwards was affiliated with Estes Church of Christ in Henderson, Tennessee. The church announced that the boy had been found on its Facebook page.

“We are very excited to announce that JoJo, a foster child kidnapped during the murder of our missionary Roberta Edwards, has been located and is alive and well,” the post said. “Haitian authorities report that at least two suspects have been taken into custody. Please continue to pray for Roberta's family and the ongoing work in Haiti.”
