Six members of an alleged al-Qa'ida cell based in the United States were formally charged last night with supporting terrorism.

A federal grand jury indicted the men, all of Yemeni descent and from Buffalo, New York, accusing them of "providing material support to a foreign terrorist organisation". They are due to appear in court later today.

The men are alleged to have attended an al-Qa'ida training camp in Afghanistan and prosecutors claim they were awaiting orders to carry out an attack in the US.
