Family of Agentinian torturer arrested

The wife and two grown-up children of a man who died after ingesting cyanide before being sentenced for human rights abuses during the military rule in Argentina in the 1970s and 1980s have been arrested in connection with his death.

It is unclear whether Hector Febres, who worked at a notorious torture centre during Argentina's "dirty war" from 1976 and 1983, committed suicide or was killed this week. But two of those guarding Forbes have also been detained amid fears that he may have been "silenced" by the military to stop him describing what happened at the Naval Mechanics School, where thousands of people were killed and thrown into the nearby River Plate.

Febres was to be the first person from the torture camp in Buenos Aires to be sentenced, but the legal process has now been cut short.
