But Mr Roof reportedly told police that he considered abandoning his plans for the attack after the church parishioners were kind to him, NBC News reported.
Mr Roof reportedly told police that he “almost didn't go through with it because everyone was so nice to him”.
Nine people were killed in the shooting at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, which has also left a city trying to come to grips with contemporary race relations.
Mr Roof was caught in Shelby, North Carolina on Thursday, less than 24 hours after the massacre. He has been charged with nine counts of murder and possession of a firearm.
His first court appearance is Friday afternoon.
