A Law and Order crew member has been shot and killed while he sat in a car reserving parking spots for filming of the TV show in Brooklyn, New York.

The 31-year-old man, a parking enforcer for the show who has not been named publicly, was sitting in a vehicle with a traffic cone on the rooftop when the shooter approached at around 5.15am on Tuesday morning on North Henry Street in the Greenpoint neighbourhood, according to ABC7.

The suspect opened the car door and shot the victim several times, striking him in the face and neck. He was taken to Woodhull Hospital and pronounced dead.

The suspect, who was wearing a black hoodie and black pants, fled the area and no arrests have been made.

The victim was a resident of Queens and had a number of previous arrests, all of them sealed, according to ABC7. It’s not clear if his past record was connected to the shooting.

The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment had posted notices in the area indicating that filming for an episode in the third season of Law & Order: Organized Crime starring Chrisopher Meloni was set to start at 6am.

An NBC and Universal Television spokesperson issued a statement reacting to the news, saying: “We were terribly saddened and shocked to hear that one of our crew members was the victim of a crime early this morning and has died as a result.

“We are working with local law enforcement as they continue to investigate. Our hearts go out to his family and friends and we ask that you respect their privacy during this time.”

Cars that were not part of the filming were to be removed from the area from 10pm on Monday.

Police are searching security footage in the hunt for the assailant.
