From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

With an epic new trailer for Batman vs Superman, sneak-peek footage from Quentin Tarantino’s forthcoming western The Hateful Eight – not to mention a special treat for Star Wars fans – Comic-Con 2015 was a vintage year for movie lovers.

The annual pop culture extravaganza, which took place in San Diego from Thursday to Sunday, saw the core cast of the original Star Wars movies – Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher – reunited on stage on Friday evening to promote the new sequel, Episode VII – The Force Awakens.

On Saturday, at a Warner Bros/DC panel where the latest trailer for Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice was unveiled, Ben Affleck recalled running into Christian Bale at a Halloween costume shop, where he was buying his son a Batman outfit. Affleck asked Bale for his advice on playing the Dark Knight, to which Bale apparently replied: “Make sure you can piss in that suit.”

Warner Bros also showed a five-minute “sizzle reel” of footage from Guy Ritchie’s new film adaptation of The Man from UNCLE, featuring Affleck’s Batman vs Superman co-star Henry Cavill as CIA agent Napoleon Solo. Quentin Tarantino showed several minutes of The Hateful Eight and revealed that its score would be written by the legendary Italian composer, Ennio Morricone, a veteran of the spaghetti western genre.

Comic book geeks were also excited by the first trailer for Deadpool, the violent and racy new comic-book adaptation starring Ryan Reynolds as a foul-mouthed, wisecracking masked mercenary. Fantasy fanboys, meanwhile, were delighted by snippets of new footage from Warcraft, British director Duncan Jones’s long-awaited big-screen version of the hugely popular videogame World of Warcraft.
