A gunman is on the run after shooting five people at a party in Colorado, police have said.

Three children and two adults have been taken to hospital with serious injuries following the incident in Aurora, according to the city's police department.

Police believe the incident took place during a party at a block of flats near the busy junction of Iliff Avenue and Buckley Road, CNN reports.

The victims are in serious condition but are expected to survive, the forced added in a tweet shortly after midnight on Sunday.

One suspect is described as a male of an unknown age who was wearing a yellow hooded sweatshirt.

Police said there may have been other possible suspects involved.
