A CIA contractor who killed two men during a shootout in Pakistan earlier this year has been charged after getting into a fight over a parking spot at a shopping centre in the United States.

Deputies responded to an altercation between two men outside Einstein Bros Bagels in Highlands Ranch, south of Denver, Colorado, and took Raymond Davis into custody on Saturday morning, police said. He was charged with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanours.

Further details on his arrest were not immediately available.

The victim, who was not identified, refused medical treatment at the scene, police said. Davis was freed after posting a $1,750 (£1,100) bond.

In January, Davis said he shot two Pakistani men who tried to rob him in Lahore. The case enraged many people in the country, where anti-American sentiment runs high.

The US insisted that Mr Davis had immunity from prosecution, but Pakistani authorities did not release him until 16 March under a deal that compensated the victims' families, who agreed to accept a $2.3m (£1.5m) "blood money" payment under Islamic tradition. AP
