NBA player Chris Copeland was stabbed outside a New York City nightclub early Wednesday morning along with a 28-year-old woman who was with the basketball player.

The Indiana Pacers player is in stable condition at a New York hospital and is expected to recover, according to the Indiana Star.

“We are aware that Chris Copeland was injured early this morning in New York City. We are still gathering information and will update when we know more. Our thoughts are with Chris and those injured,” Indiana Pacers President Larry Bird said in a statement.

Mr Copeland and Katrine Saltara were outside the 1 OAK club in the Chelsea neighbourhood shortly before 4 am when they were stabbed, reports say. The two allegedly were arguing outside the club when the suspect — Shezoy Bleary – got involved, according to the New York Daily News.

Mr Bleary allegedly stabbed Mr Copeland in the stomach and sliced Ms Saltara on her arm and leg, and accidentally cut his friend in the attack. Mr Copeland’s driver subdued the attacked and held him until police came, according to reports.

Mr Copeland – a former New York Knicks player – was back in New York to face his former team. Two other NBA players, Thabo Sefalosha and Pero Antic, both of the Atlanta Hawks, also were arrested for disrupting the scene of the crime.

The Hawks are set to play the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday.
