From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. A suspect has been fatally shot by police on after stabbing at least five people on campus at the University of California, Merced.

The attack occured on Wednesday outside the university's Classroom and Office Building.

John Price, chief executive officer of Artisan Construction, was remodeling the building where the attack occurred, told the Merced Sun-Star that his son was working when he was stabbed.

“They heard a scuffle in the classroom right across from where they were working and it sounded like a fight. So [my son] opened the door and the guy lunged at him,” he said. “It got the [attacker] outside the room, away from others."

Two victims were airlifted to a local hospital while three were treated at the scene. Niether the suspect or victims have been identified.

The university, where 6,600 students are enrolled, cancelled classes for the remainder of the day.
