An 89-year-old man from Sacramento has been charged with the murder of his 83-year-old wife.

Masaharu Ono is due to appear in court on Tuesday, following his arrest on Friday evening, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department said.

The Sacramento Bee newspaper said few details had been released about the case. However, police said they were called to Mr Ono’s house after he contacted them to say he had found his wife dead.

Once they arrived and carried out an investigation “it was determined the victim had injuries which contributed to her death that were suspicious in nature”.

The Sacramento coroner’s office identified the victim as Hiroko Ono.
