From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Chloe Goins, 25, filed a civil suit on Tuesday against disgraced 78-year-old comedian Bill Cosby.

The model says she was sexually assaulted by Mr Cosby in 2008 at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles when she was 17-years-old. She first reported the alleged assault nine-months ago and is now seeking $75,000 in damages along with a jury trial, the BBC reports.

Ms Goins sent a message to the more than 40 victims who have publicly accused Mr Cosby of sexual assault.

"Today I recognize that I've taken legal action that many of the other victims of Bill Cosby will never be able to take," she told reporters in Los Angeles during a news conference. "For that reason, I offer this message to those brave women: your experience was just like mine and mine just like yours. We are not alone, we did not ask for these attacks, and these attacks are not our fault."

Attorney Spencer Kuvin, who’s representing Ms Goins, told reporters that he knows Mr Cosby was with his client, drugged her, gave her a spiked drink and molested her.

"This lawsuit represents a significant milestone in the collapse of Bill Cosby's fabricated public image over the years. This is the only lawsuit now filed by one of Mr Cosby's sexual assault victims that falls directly within the statute of limitations."

Mr Cosby will testify in court on Friday in a seperate lawsuit brought forth by Judy Huth. Ms Huth has accused the Mr Cosby of sexual assault when she was 15-years-old.
