From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

President Barack Obama paid the ultimate compliment to a White House chef by claiming his delicious pies are so addictive, he "puts crack in them".

Speaking at an LGBT event on Monday, the president praised pastry chef Bill Yosses for his baking skills and jokingly added: "We call Bill the "Crustmaster' because his pies.... I don't know what he does, whether he puts crack in them..."

However, a straight-faced Michelle Obama had no appetite for her husband's crack jokes and immediately told reporters: "No he doesn't, there is no crack in our pies."

But Mr Obama didn't stop there. He went on to say his cholesterol went though the roof after his first year at the White House and had to stage an intervention to keep the Crustmaster and his pies away.

"My cholesterol shot up and the doctor was like, what happened, you had this really low cholesterol, you were so healthy, like what happened?

"And I thought, it's the pie! It's the pie! So we had to establish like a really firm rule about no pie during the week," he added as the crowd laughed.

Describing his decision to leave the White House as "bittersweet", Mr Yosses is moving to New York to work on a new project teaching children and adults about healthier eating habits.

And he certainly leaves some sweet memories behind.
