From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Posted to Facebook by Caprina D Harris, it shows a little girl crying uncontrollably after finding out Mr Obama is coming to the end of his second term – and will likely be replaced by either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton.
Ms Harris writes: “On Saturday morning just before Gymnastics, My Dranbaby found out that our President Barack Obama was no longer going to be our President!!!
“He has been her President all of her life and Yes her birthday is also on AUGUST 4!!!! My poor baby!!!”
In the video, which has now been viewed more than two million times, the girl can just about be heard saying: “I don’t wanna… I don’t want another president.
“Barack Obama *inaudible*…,” she says.
Thanks for the huge love and support!!

Told by her grandmother that Mr Obama can only serve two terms and his “time is up”, she screams: “No”.
The video has been widely shared on social media by users with the general consensus that they “know how she is feeling” – and it all culminated in a comment from the verified account of the president himself.
Mr Obama said: “Caprina, tell her to dry her tears, because I’m not going anywhere. Once I leave the White House, I’ll still be a citizen just like her.
“And when she grows up, she can get involved right alongside me. In the meantime, I’ll keep an eye out for her letter, and we’ll always get to celebrate our birthdays together!”
The post was also shared by the account of Malia Obama, the president’s daughter, who wrote: “Thanks for the huge love and support.”
