A man in the US has been charged with killing his stepfather by giving him what police call an “atomic wedgie”, leading the alleged victim to suffocate on his own underwear.

Police say former marine Brad Lee Davis, 33, got into a fight with 58-year-old Denver St Clair when he “spoke ill” of his wife, Mr Davis’ mother, in the days before Christmas.

Officers from Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma arrested Mr Davis on Tuesday, and a Sheriff’s Office affidavit said he “grabbed St Clair’s underwear and gave him an ‘atomic wedgie’”.

The 10-page document describes a fight that broke out on 21 December between Mr Davis and Mr St Clair. It says Mr Davis claims his step-father threw the first punch, but that as the domestic dispute intensified he knocked Mr St Clair unconscious and “pulled the elastic band of his underwear over his head and around his neck”.

Oklahoma Medical Examiner spokeswoman Amy Elliott said the cause of death was asphyxiation and blunt force trauma.

Pottawatomie County Sheriff Deputy Travis Palmer said both men had been drinking beer on the night of the incident, while the authorities also claim Mr Davis had earlier sent a text to a friend saying he was going to hurt his stepfather because he had “nothing to lose”.

Investigators said St Clair's elastic waistband was stretched over his head and that it left ligature marks around his neck. Blood splatter was also found in the kitchen, the living room and on the living room ceiling.

Local news station KFOR TV said Mr Davis was being held in Pottawatomie County jail without bond.
