Officials say the busy Train 188 travelling from Washington DC to New York departed at about 9.30pm and was going into a turn when it started to shake.
An investigation into what caused the devastating crash in the city's Port Richmond neighborhood has been launched.
Passengers have posted videos of their escape from the wreckage.
All seven train cars, including the engine, were left in "various stages of disarray" by the crash.
