An altar where a priest filmed himself having sex with two women has been removed and "burned", a church official said.

Last month, Father Travis Clark, 37, was charged with obscenity after he was caught having a threesome with two dominatrices at a chapel in Louisiana.

New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond in a statement on Friday condemned the pastor's "obscene and deplorable" actions, adding he would never serve in the Catholic ministry again.

“His desecration of the altar in church was demonic. I am infuriated by his actions," said Mr Aymond. When the details became clear, we had the altar removed and burned".

Father Clark was arrested on 30 September after engaging in sexual acts with the two women, one of whom also worked as an adult film performer.

The trio were caught when a passerby noticed the lights at Saints Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church in Pearl River were on later than usual.

Peering inside to investigate, the witness reportedly saw a half-naked Clark having sex with the two women, who were dressed in high heel boots and corsets.

The alter had been fitted with stage lights and a phone was spotted mounted on a tripod, suggesting Clark had been filming the encounter. Sex toys were also present.

The witness captured the scene on their mobile phone and handed the video to the Pearl River police department.

Officers attended the church and were told by the two women that they had been filming "roleplay" with the priest.

But Clark and the two dominatrices were each charged with obscenity because the acts took place in public view, police said.

The pastor was relesed on a $25,000 (£19,200) bond while the two women posted bonds of $7,500 (£5,760).

If found guilty of obscenity, each could face a maximum of three years in jail.
