Will the #sharkselfie catch on?
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Video shot for Epic TV shows underwater photographer Aaron Gekoski, 34, spending several days attempting to capture footage of him and his diving partner swimming with large bait balls of sardine off the coast of Durban in South Africa. However, with poor visibility and a general lack of sardine, Gekoski decides instead to resort to a plan B of sorts, although this could be one of the most frightening plan B's ever attempted.
Gekoski, who comes from East Dulwich in London, makes the crazy decision to jump into water filled with over 30 black tip sharks. He then decides that, instead of keeping a safe distance or even just swimming away, he needs to get a picture of himself with the sharks, thus attempting to start a new #sharkselfie craze.
Of course, it's a trend that will not be for everyone - especially when video from the shoot shows one shark biting the buoy line right above Gekoski's head as he continues to nonchalantly snap away.
#Sharkselfie or #epicselfie? Either way, it's #crazyselfie.
