From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Oscar Pistorius is set to learn today whether he will spend time behind bars after being found guilty last month of culpable homicide, following the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in February 2013.

On September 11, Pistorius was cleared of the premeditated murder of Steenkamp after she was shot three times through the bathroom door of the pair’s Johannesburg home on Valentine’s Day last year. However, he was subsequently found guilty of the lesser charge of culpable homicide, with Judge Thokozile Masipa concluding that the state prosecution team had failed to prove that Pistorius had "intended to kill" the former model.

Judge Thokozile Masipa agreed that Pistorius had acted “negligently” when he shot Steenkamp but this had been carried out in the "belief that there was an intruder".

Following, the trial the family of Steenkamp had said “justice had not been served” and were disappointed with the Judge's decision to acquit the former Paralympic athlete of murder.

The family of Pistorius, who has denied murdering Steenkamp throughout his trial, said after the trial that they were “grateful” for Judge Masipa’s decision to find Pistorius “not guilty".

The sentence for culpable homicide could see Pistorius imprisoned for a period of 15 years, although Judge Masipa could decide to suspend the sentence or merely impose a fine.
