From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Blade runner Oscar Pistorius returned to court for a third day amid revelations that the lead investigator in the case against him is himself facing attempted murder charges.

Hilton Botha, who took the stand against Pistorius at the Paralympic and Olympic track star's bail hearing earlier this week, is due to appear before a judge in May after allegedly  firing on a minibus full of passengers, police spokesman Brigadier Neville Malila said.

Pistorius, a double amputee dubbed "Blade Runner" because of his carbon fibre racing blades, faces life in prison if convicted of the premeditated murder of Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine's Day.

He has admitted shooting the model, 29, but claims he did so thinking she was a burglar or burglars, who were in the bathroom.

The Independent's Africa correspondent Daniel Howden is inside Pretoria Magistrates' Court, where he was covering the bail hearing live.
