24 feared dead in Awacs crash

Celmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska - An Awacs military radar plane with 24 people aboard crashed on takeoff early yesterday, killing at least 19. Five others were reported missing. The plane went down deep in the woods, inaccessible to fire engines. Rescuers had to bulldoze a path to the site. Air Force officials said the E-3 Awacs, a Boeing 707 modified for military surveillance, had left the base on a training mission about with 24 military personnel aboard - 22 Americans and two Canadians.
