From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

POLICE INVESTIGATING a triple shooting which left a man and a woman dead said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

The body of a man, who suffered shotgun wounds to the head, was found in the hall of a large detached property in the village of Anstey, Leicestershire, shortly before 1am yesterday.

A woman, who suffered gunshot wounds to her chest, was taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary where she died shortly after arrival.

A second woman also suffered gunshot injuries and she was taken to the same hospital where her condition was "stable". She is said by officers to be too ill to be interviewed.

Detective Inspector Roger Skene said the dead and injured were all aged in their late 30s to early 40s and were "closely connected" to each other.

DI Skene said: "We are still trying to establish exactly what happened and we have launched a murder investigation. The person detained in hospital has not been arrested and is not a suspect at this stage." Officers are trying to trace relatives of the dead.

A weapon was found at the scene and was being examined by forensic scientists.
