The mother and baby, who weighs 5lb, 6oz, were said to be doing well following a Caesarean section.

Mrs Witchalls, 26, was attacked while walking her two-year-old son home through a Surrey village in April. Richard Cazaly, 23, has been treated as the prime suspect since his apparent suicide days after the attack.

Doctors at first thought she was clinically dead, but she has gradually regained the use and feeling in parts of her body. She was 10 weeks' pregnant at the time of the attack and the baby was due around Christmas.

She was released from hospital last week and returned home to her husband, Benoit, and son Joseph, in Little Bookham.

But at 5.30am yesterday Mrs Witchalls started contractions. She was taken by ambulance to St George's Hospital in Tooting, south London, and at 2.30pm she gave birth.
