An image of a grey reef shark swimming off the coast of New Zealand yesterday won the innovation award at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards in London.

Briton Pete Atkinson sailed towards the tiny Beveridge Reef for 12 days before he was able to capture the shark's image - both direct and refracted.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Yearwas Hawaii-based photographer Doug Perrine for his picture of two sharks swimming around a bait of sardines off South Africa. Gabby Salazar, 17, of North Carolina was named Young Photographer of the Year.
