The raiders went into a Northern Bank branch on Wellington Street after holding two members of staff hostage in their homes.

As detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland's new Crime Operations Department launched a major investigation, security sources disclosed the scale of the theft.

One confirmed millions had been taken from the vaults.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "Detectives are investigating the removal of a substantial amount of cash from a bank in the Belfast area."
