Nasreen Jamalzadeh, of Raynes Park, south-west London, was injured on Monday when her sledge crashed during a school ski trip. Her head was smashed against a rock after she and a friend lost control while hurtling down a 160-metre slope at Fusch, near Salzburg.
A police spokesman said: "No one appears to have been wearing helmets. But it is not usual for helmets to be worn for sledging."
The accident happened at 10.30pm local time as the girls were sledging with their 80-strong group from Ursuline High School in Wimbledon.
Cathy Storey, 15, from Wimbledon, was sitting behind Nasreen on the sledge and broke a bone in her hand. Nasreen was declared clinically dead and was not expected to survive.
