It leaves three contestants, Craig, Darren and Anna, remaining in the purpose-built house in east London ahead of the final stage next week, when the audience will be vote for the winner.
BT said 3.3 million callers took part in the show's telephone poll, the largest such vote organised by a British television programme. The previous record of 2.6 million calls was achieved by ITV's The Monarchy Debate.
Melanie was evicted after she received 69 per cent of votes cast. The 26-year-old sales and marketing executive from north London, who spent 57 days in the house, whooped with joy when news of her eviction was announced and declared: "I just can't wait to get out there now."
However, the ever-present cameras later caught her blinking back tears and biting her lip.
Bookmakers have made Craig, a builder from Liverpool, favourite to win £70,000 for being the final resident.
