From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. A man has died after swimming in a reservoir - the third such death in Greater Manchester this month.

Emergency services were called to Audenshaw Reservoir at 3.20pm on Thursday after receiving reports an individual was in difficulty in the water.

A 20 year-old man was recovered from the council-built reservoir - where swimming is not allowed - and treated by paramedics at the scene. The man was later taken to hospital, where he later died.

It is believed young people were present, too. Manchester Evening News reported they were later seen recounting the event to police officers.

Earlier this month, two young men died within hours of each other while swimming at reservoirs in Manchester and Bolton.

Greater Manchester Police's Tameside South division posted on Facebook: "After an extensive search by all those attending, the male was eventually pulled out of the water after approximately 20 minutes under the surface and taken up to hospital.

"Unfortunately the male died as a result of being in the water for such a length of time.

"This is not an area where swimming is permitted given the potential risks to human life as was seen in such tragic circumstances.

"Whilst the hot weather is with us please be aware of potential dangers around swimming/being near deep water lakes."
