From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A 31-YEAR-OLD kitchen porter, Glory Kwantreng, was convicted of raping and robbing a teenage French student as she visited the grave of Karl Marx in Highgate cemetery, north London. He was remanded in custody at the Old Bailey for medical reports and will be sentenced next month.

The attack in May came only two months after his release from a six-month sentence for indecently assaulting a 10-year-old girl.

Kwantreng, of Kentish Town, north London, was arrested after a tip-off to a local newspaper, but released after a cursory check of his alibi, which was discovered to be flawed four months later.

Judge Coombe criticised the investigation as lax and ordered that a copy of his remarks should go to the police commissioner.

The girl was about to return to France after working in Britain as a teacher and au pair. Kwantreng dragged her into the undergrowth. She was punched, bitten, threatened with death, raped and robbed.

Kwantreng was arrested a second time for another matter and the student picked him out at an identification parade. Impressions taken of his teeth also matched bite marks on her neck.
