A student changed his name by deed poll - because it worked out less expensive than paying a fee to change his name on a Ryanair booking.

According to the Sun, Adam Armstrong, 19, had booked a holiday to Ibiza with his girlfriend, India Lomas. The mistake came about when India’s step father accidentally booked the flight with the budget airline under the name ‘Adam West’.

The teenager says that Ryanair asked him to fork out £220 to change his details- double the price of the actual flight.

Reluctant to pay the hefty fee, the student worked out that it would be cheaper for him to change legally his name. He changed his name by deed poll to ‘Adam West’ and then ordered a new passport under the moniker.

Changing his name was free and the new passport was just £103- a fraction of what Ryanair were charging.

A spokesperson for Ryanair said: “Customers are asked to ensure that the details they enter at the time of booking are correct before completing their booking and we offer a 24 hour ‘grace period’ to correct minor booking errors.

“A name change fee is charged in order to discourage and prevent unauthorised online travel agents from ‘screenscraping’ Ryanair’s cheapest fares and reselling them on to unwitting consumers at hugely inflated costs.”
