From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Hundreds of students at the University of St Andrews have celebrated the start of a new term by wearing their red gowns on a beach ā€“ despite dense haar.

Students wore their gowns for a walk along the harbour walls in St Andrews, Fife, and down to the beach to celebrate the new semester ā€“ despite haar, a thick mist from the North Sea which blows in on the east coast of Scotland.

The tradition, known as Pier Walk, is one of the oldest in the universityā€™s history and was held to mark the start of the Martinmas semester on Monday.

It took a different route from previous years due to the closure of the pier after Ā£3 million damage caused by storms in October 2023.

This year, students walked from St Salvatorā€™s Chapel, passing the cathedral, to gather on the East Sands.

Heir to the throne William and Kate met as students at the university in 2001.
