The mass death of seabirds is on a larger scale than anything on record in the UK, according to new figures. Up to 50,000 dead and dying guillemots are estimated to have been washed ashore this month in the Shetland Isles, the worst-affected area. There have been at least 1,500 victims on the Orkney Isles and hundreds more on mainland North Sea coastal stretches.
