From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Three teenagers lay dead in the wreckage of their car for several hours yesterday before traffic police discovered their bodies. Officers had been alerted by a motorist who spotted the shattered Peugeot at the bottom of an embankment.

The teenagers, two aged 17 and one 16, died after their car left the road. A fourth, who was thrown clear, suffered minor injuries and severe shock, and was taken home in a daze. Only later did he go to Abergavenny police to explain what had happened after being persuaded to do so by his family.

Police would not name the dead last night until the next of kin had been informed, but did say that they came from the villages of Mardy and Govilon, near Abergavenny, Gwent.

Police believe the Peugeot estate car crashed in the early hours of the morning as it was travelling along the A465 between Pandy and Abergavenny.

For some reason, as yet unexplained, the car left the road and plunged down an embankment about 200 metres from a roundabout. The 18-year-old survivor was somehow thrown clear and wandered from the scene in extreme shock, to be taken home shortly afterwards.

At about 6.50am, a motorist alerted police. They found the three teenagers, who were declared dead at the scene.
