David Cameron has stressed areas of agreement between the Conservatives and Liberal Demo- crats in a hint that he would seek a deal with the third party in a hung parliament.

The Tory leader said last night: "Whether you're Labour, Conservative or Liberal Democrat, you're motivated by ... the same aims: a country that is safer, fairer, greener and where opportunity is more equal ... and between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats there is a lot less disagreement than there used to be."

The Tory leader said: "Westminster has become so much about point-scoring and political dividing-lines that people are left out ... I've been guilty of these offences and no doubt will commit them again. But we shouldn't stop trying to get it right."

Danny Alexander, chief of staff to Nick Clegg, said: "David Cameron seems confused about what a fairer Britain means. For the Liberal Democrats it means cutting taxes for the lowest paid, for him it means cutting them for millionaires."
