Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Ukip's voteshare rose in every constituency apart from two in last week's general election.

The party saw a 9.5 per cent rise in voteshare across the electorate in last week’s general election, a swing which Labour officials admit cost them seats.

The areas Ukip gained the most fervent support were around the Thames Estuary and areas of Yorkshire, whereas the party comparatively failed to make much gain in London and Scotland.

In Scotland Ukip's impression was distinctly lower than elsewhere around the UK, due to the rise in support of the SNP, led by Nicola Sturgeon.

The party saw a rise in voteshare in 622 of the 624 seats it contested, and increased support in all contested constituencies in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Ukip also averaged a rise of 10.2 per cent in its contested constituencies, with 20 constituency seats increasing by 20 per cent or higher.

While Ukip only achieved 1 seat in the election, the rise in voteshare has increased the party's profile and standing as an alternative to the traditional two party system.

Now Ukip face a leadership crisis as Douglas Carswell has called for a rejection of the annual sum of £650,000 offered to UKIP to cover the costs in parliamentary business, and others have called for him to succeed Nigel Farage as leader.

The row follows the rejection of Nigel Farage’s letter of resignation as party leader and announcements of future plans to run as an MP again.

Douglas Carswell, UKIP’s only MP, won his Clacton seat with a 44.4 per cent rise in voteshare.
