Tampon tax: Here are the MPs who voted against the amendment to scrap it
Only three Conservative MPs rebelled against the whips - and they were all men
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Politicians voted against removing the so called “tampon tax” currently levied on female sanitary products on Monday.
The motion, brought by Labour, was defeated by 305 votes to 287 with just three Conservative MPs rebelling against the whips – and they were all men.
Philip Davies, MP for Shipley, Philip Hollobone, MP for Kettering, and David Nuttall, MP for Bury North, voted for an amendment to the Government Finance Bill that would have forced officials to open negotiations with the European Union on the five per cent tax on tampons and sanitary products.
Every other Conservative MP voted against the amendment, as well as two UP (Ulster Unionist Party) MPs.
All 213 Labour MPs voted Aye, as well as five DUP MPs, six Liberal Democrats, three members of Plaid Cymru, and two SCLP MPs. Almost every SNP MP voted in favour of the amendment, as well as Green MP Caroline Lucas, Independent MP and Ukip MP Douglas Carswell.
Government ministers have claimed the current rate of tax is the lowest allowed under EU law.
But critics have argued tampons are an essential item, and therefore should be exempt from tax, and are not a “luxury” as they are currently deemed.
Campaigners have also noted men’s sanitary items, such as razors, are viewed as essential and are not liable for tax.
The amendment, proposed by Labour MP Paula Sherriff, was supported by the party’s front bench. The last government slashed the VAT on women’s sanitary products from 17.5 per cent to the current five per cent rate.
