MPs vote for legalising Northern Ireland abortion

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

MPs have voted to liberalise access to abortion and allow same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland.

The House of Commons debate ended with significant majorities voting in favour of reforms, which will come into force if devolved government is not restored at Stormont by 21 October.

MPs voted by 383-73 to legalise same-sex marriage, while a proposal to extend access to abortion was approved by 332 to 99.

Labour, the Conservatives and the Scottish National Party gave their MPs free votes on the issues.

The Tories and the Democratic Unionist Party accounted for most of the members who opposed each proposal, although five Labour MPs and two SNP politicians also voted against lifting the abortion ban.

Hundreds of MPs did not take part in the votes, including prime minister Theresa May.

Some abstained, while others were paired with absent MPs or were given permission not to take part due to other commitments or illness.

Here The Independent looks at how the parliamentarians voted:
