How your MP voted on the Rwanda Bill
Rwanda Bill passes second reading as 313 Tory MPs vote in favour of legislation
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Rishi Sunak secured victory on Tuesday night in a crunch vote on the government’s flagship illegal migration policy to send asylum seekers to Rwanda.
Parliament voted through the second reading of the Safety of Rwanda Bill, with 313 MPs voting for the legislation and 269 against, giving the government a majority of 44.
It means the Rwanda plan lives to fight another day, although the prime minister faces another Commons showdown in January on the third reading of the bill.
MPs on both sides of the Conservative Party are not fully satisfied with the plan and 37 mostly rightwingers either did not vote for the bill or abstained, after arguing the legislation was not strong enough to stop legal challenges.
Former home secretary Suella Braverman, former immigration minister Robert Jenrick, former cabinet minister Sir Simon Clarke, ERG chairman Mark Francois and Miriam Cates and Danny Kruger from the New Conservatives group were among those who had no vote recorded.
