General election: How UK newspapers are reacting to 'landslide' Tory election win

The Conservative Party have won the general election with a landslide victory, while Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he plans to quit, before the next election at least, following his party’s large defeat.

UK papers have been reacting to the news, with most outlets leading on the Tories massively expanding their majority in parliament.

The Daily Mail, Metro and The Times – whose front page carried a picture of Boris Johnson and his dog – focussed on the scale of the Conservative win, calling it a “landslide”.​

“Johnson’s historic victory” read The Telegraph’s headline, who supported Mr Johnson‘s party in the election, emphasising how he oversaw the Tories’ best election result since Margaret Thatcher in 1987.

Here at The Independent, our front page compared Mr Johnson’s win to Donald Trump’s populist victory in the US, and called it “the first post-truth election”.

The Mail celebrated the win as a triumph, saying “Rejoice!” and claiming the result “will finally see Brexit delivered”.

“Carrie on Boris”, read The Sun‘s headline, accompanied by an image of the prime minister with his smiling girlfriend, Carrie Symonds, and “Corbyn’s on his bike” on its front page.

The Guardian, who endorsed Mr Corbyn’s party for the vote, focused on Labour’s defeat as well, saying: “Labour in meltdown as Johnson seizes majority”.

“Johnson unleashed” said the i newspaper whose front page carried an image of the prime minister taking a selfie.

The Daily Mirror called the exit poll’s predictions of Labour’s worst loss since 1935 a “Nightmare before Xmas”.

Meanwhile, the Daily Star called the election “comical”, led with a large picture of Diane Abbott reportedly wearing two left shoes and branded Mr Johnson a “clown prince”.
