From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Donald Trump‘s state visit to the UK will take place next year, senior Government sources have told The Independent.

It is also possible the US President may make an unofficial visit before then, possibly to one of his two golf courses in Scotland.

When asked when he plans to come to London at the G20 summit in Hamburg last weekend, Mr Trump said: “We’ll work that out.”

He said he expects a trade deal to be completed with the UK “very, very quickly”.

Mr Trump’s state visit to the UK appeared to have been axed after officials failed to mention it in the Queen’s speech, but a spokesman for Number 10 told The Independent this was because a date hasn’t yet been chosen.

They said: “An invitation has been extended and accepted.

“The visit wasn’t mentioned in the Queen’s Speech because a date hasn’t been fixed yet.”

Theresa May invited Mr Trump to visit the UK after they were pictured holding hands together at the White House earlier this year.

It appeared to have been pushed back after activists across the UK promised huge protests if the controversial visit went ahead.

A petition calling for the state visit to be cancelled reached 1.85 million signatures.
