David Cameron urged to sign up to trafficking crackdown

David Cameron was urged today not to let Tory Eurosceptics prevent him from signing a European directive tackling human trafficking.

Acting Labour leader Harriet Harman said he should not let Tories who were "irrationally hostile" to Europe "stand in the way of stopping human trafficking".

At Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Cameron said human trafficking was an "evil trade" but the UK was already taking all the steps outlined in the directive.

The coalition Government has come under attack from Labour MPs and campaigners including the Archbishop of York for not signing up to the draft directive.

The act is aimed at co-ordinating efforts across EU countries and will allow the prosecution of offenders in one state for offences committed in others.
