Cash-for-questions suspensions to take effect
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The suspensions of two Tory MPs who took cash for tabling parliamentary questions are set to be confirmed after a Commons debate and vote tomorrow, writes Patricia Wynn Davies.
The all-party Committee of Privileges has recommended that David Tredinnick, MP for Bosworth, faces suspension without pay for 20 sitting days, while the ban on Graham Riddick, MP for Colne Valley, should last 10 days.
MPs will also debate the actions of Dale Campbell-Savours, Labour MP for Workington, who twice gate-crashed private meetings of the Select Committee on Members' Interests in protest at its handling of a complaint against Neil Hamilton, the former corporate affairs minister.
The committee is examining Mr Hamilton's acceptance of hospitality at the Paris Ritz Hotel, owned by Mohammed al Fayed, without declaring it in the MPs' register of interests.
Mr Campbell-Savours says he staged the protests for a number of reasons, including the presence on the committee of a Government whip, and the committee's decision to call neither Mr Fayed nor Mr Hamilton as witnesses.
