Cameron is told: forget your hairdo, wear a cycling helmet
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Tory leader's penchant for removing his helmet when he comes in sight of a camera has infuriated MPs, who say he is setting a terrible example to children. They have seized on his helmetless appearance at the Commons on Budget day and urged him to change his ways and put his safety before his hairstyle.
The Conservative leader, who often cycles into work on his mountain bike, is not the only bike-riding Tory MP to be singled out. Boris Johnson, the party's flamboyant higher education spokesman, and Andrew Mitchell, shadow international development secretary, also reportedly fail to wear helmets.
Denis MacShane, Labour MP for Rotherham, who cycles in every day, has written to Mr Cameron urging him to set a good example.
"I have myself been knocked off my bicycle while navigating approaches to Parliament," he said.
According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, around 75 per cent of cyclists killed have major head injuries.
