Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.David Cameron will outline Tory plans today to help first-time buyers, after tearing up his party's opposition to building houses in the Green Belt.
The Tory leader risked a split in his ranks by mocking people who believe Britain should "build absolutely nothing anywhere near anyone" in an article for The Independent on Sunday. He argued that more homes would bring down house prices.
Mr Cameron, who will meet first-time buyers today, will say: "Our goal is a Britain in which there are more beautiful, affordable, eco-friendly homes. And I passionately believe that everyone should have the right to own their own home."
He will add: "We want to bring down the barriers to getting on the housing ladder, to share prosperity and to give families the scope to fulfil their aspirations of having a place of their own."
Labour pointed out that six Tory frontbenchers, including Mr Cameron, have been campaigning against plans for housing in their own constituencies.
