At the first Prime Minister's Question Time since the Easter break, the Tory leaderaccused ministers of "mismanagement" over contracts for GPs and hospital consultants amid reports that some GPs are paid up to £250,000 a year.
But Mr Blair defended increased pay for doctors and nurses as "money well spent". He said: "I don't accept that the GPs are overpaid, or nurses are overpaid, or consultants are overpaid.
"It's nonsense that lots of GPs are earning £250,000 a year. The average is under £100,000."
