From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Leave-EU boss Arron Banks and spokesman Andy Wigmore walked out of the Digital, Media, Culture and Sport select committee today saying it would make them late for a "lunch appointment".
The pair were giving evidence after it was revealed they met Russia's ambassador to the UK three times in 2015 and 2016 - rather than the single “six-hour boozy lunch” Mr Banks had previously acknowledged.
During the session it was revealed that Mr Banks handed the Russian ambassador Alexander Yakovenko a telephone number for Donald Trump’s team after his election win.
"We've got places to be, I'm afraid" the former UKIP donor told stunned MPs.
"I really have to insist. I was told a certain time and we've got a lunch appointment that I don't want to be late for".
Pushing back the chair of the committee Damian Collins asked Mr Banks "Could you just give us five minutes of your time?"
His request was met with the reply: "No... the word is no".
