£70m more to help flooding victims

Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, announced a major increase in aid to Pakistan yesterday as the country struggles to cope with the flood devastation.

He told the Liberal Democrat conference the UK will be "dramatically increasing" the amount of money going to Pakistan beyond the aid it has already provided. The UK will give a further £70m, taking the total committed to £134m, the Department for International Development said.

The money will provide temporary schools, assist farmers with replacing livestock and crops and help support emergency efforts in south Pakistan.

Mr Clegg said he feared "worse is still to come" for the country after visiting the flood-stricken areas. "I've never seen anything like it. I found it deeply, deeply, personally, a very shocking experience because the scale is just really difficult to comprehend."
