The incident was captured in dashcam footage in the early hours of New Year's Day in Bideford, Devon.
As the van makes its way up a hill sparks can be seen flying from its left-hand-side.
Moments later the door topples off into the road. Officers can be seen retrieving it after turning on their blue flashing lights.
Dashcam owner Pete Mann, 27, told the he "couldn't believe my eyes” as he witnessed the incident.
A spokeswoman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “In the early hours of Tuesday 1 January, a door from a police van travelling in Bideford became detached and landed in the road."
